Eyes of the Deer
by Christine Rem / Maia Sharp

He pursued her as a hunter
Predator to prey
Then he finally caught up to her
At a sure fire range away

She was lined up, just a target
Nothing he’d recognize
But when she looked up directly at him
He saw a child’s eyes

Innocent reflection
Silent sacrifice
We bury our confession inside
Cause no one wants to hear
About the eyes of the deer

When we meet nobody’s talking
Till I say I’ve seen it too
Then the borders, they start dissolving
We can get to the getting through

We can stop the isolation
Of thinking anyone is the only one
What we pushed down into the darkness
Can finally see the sun

Innocent reflection
Silent sacrifice
We bury our confession inside
Cause no one wants to hear
About the eyes of the deer

About the eyes of the deer

Songwriting with Soldiers (SWS) is a
nonprofit organization that operates from a simple principle - pair veterans and active duty service members with professional songwriters to craft songs about their military experiences. With a focus on collaboration and building trust, this innovative program offers a unique path to helping soldiers, their families, communities and our nation cope with the aftermath of combat duty and the challenges in returning home.

Darden Smith is Co Founder and Creative Director along with Mary Judd from Albany, New York who is the Co Founder and Program Director.

Christine Rem COL (R) attended a 2017 SWS Retreat at Carey Institute, Albany, NY and created  the song " Eyes of the Deer" with Singer/Songwriter Maia Sharpe.

In 2018 Christine was interviewed by SWS Board Member Barbara Kornreich  who is the Founder / Producer of Piper7/Media which specializes in creating short documentaries.

Cleanup Work at the Christopher's House Begins
Cleanup Begins

In 2016 and 2017 donations from various veterans groups and other charitable contributions enabled CDWV to replace a number of windows, perform necessary electrical upgrades, and begin site prep for a parking lot in the rear of the building.  Rensselaer County Heroes at Home organization provided a team of veterans who helped clear out the building in anticipation of the renovations. In the spring of 2017 this group also helped plant a Veteran Victory Garden and flower garden followed by a traditional Native American blessing ceremony held on June 14, 2017. Three Native American Women Veterans performed the Blessing Ceremony and many local veterans donated vegetable and flower plants.

Held a traditional Native American blessing of the Veterans Victory Garden at the Christopher House.

Larry Bringing Good, with Heroes@Home worked with Dixon Williams to establish a Veteran's Victory Garden in the backyard at Christopher House.

The need is clear, and now we can give back to our Women Veterans!
